Key Stage 1 Sportshall Athletics

On Tuesday the 11th February Blackburn Central High School (BCHS) hosted the final event of the Blackburn & Darwen Sportshall Athletics season. 6 Primary Schools attended BCHS to take part in a variety of athletic activities lead by young leaders from BCHS.

Over the last 4 weeks 11 festivals have taken place across the Borough for all ages. BCHS hosted the second KS1 (Years 1 & 2) festival following Witton Parks event on Monday. St Anthony’s, The Redeemer, Turton and Edgworth, Salesbury, St James’ Lower Darwen and Lower Darwen attended the event. They all brought 4 boys and 4 girls who completed a variety of activities adapted from the format designed for older children. Pupils had a great time completing field events such as the Vortex throw, the 5 stride jump and the balancer! They then competed in a series of fun relay races.

Lower Darwen were crowned Year 5/6 Borough Champions on the 29th January, they also won their Year 3/4 event at Darwen Academy on the 4th February, and yes you guessed it they added the KS1 crown to their list of achievements as well! Lower Darwen finished on 104 points with St Anthony’s Second on 86 points and the Redeemer 3rd on 74 points.

It was great to see so many children enjoying the events and so many smiles on faces. This was probably the 1st time most pupils had represented their schools at a sporting event, I hope they enjoyed it enough to make them want to get involved in many more events in the future.

Over the last month over 800 children aged between 6 and 11 have taken part in Sportshall Athletics festivals. These events have been officiated by over 100 Young Leaders from the Boroughs secondary schools. This is a massive increase from previous years and the increase in numbers has been made possible by Primary schools pooling their Sports Premium funding.

I would like to thank all of the schools who have hosted events, schools and pupils who have attended and the teachers who have managed and coached all of the teams involved. I hope to see many of those involved at Sportshall athletics events next year!
