Tag Rugby Competition - 10th October 2013

On Thursday 10th October Blackburn Rugby Club hosted the Blackburn and Darwen Primary schools Tag Rugby competition.  Tag rugby is a non-contact version of the sport played by boys and girls together.  16 Schools in total took part and teams were put into 4 leagues of 4. Each team played the other teams in their group with the top 2 teams in each group progressing into the quarter finals.

The 4 quarter final matches were between St Cuthbert’s and Lammack, Shadsworth and The Redeemer, Feniscowles and Holy Trinity, and St Gabriels A and Roe Lee.

St Cuthbert’s, The Redeemer, Holy Trinity and St Gabriel’s all won their quarter final matches. St Gabriels then narrowly defeated St Cuthbert’s by 5 tries to 4 and Holy Trinity stopped The Redeemer from winning their 6th consecutive title by beating them by 3 tries to 1.

This meant that St Cuthbert’s and The Redeemer were left to fight it out for 3rd place with St Cuthbert’s taking the accolade by the margin of 7 tries to 5.

Holy Trinity reversed the result form the group stages and showed how much they had developed through the tournament by defeating a spirited St Gabriel’s team by a score of 6 tries to 4 to be crowned Blackburn and Darwen Champions for 2013/14.  Holy Trinity will go forward to the county final in July as part of the National School Games.

‘It was great to see this competition growing every year and around 160 children playing and enjoying Tag Rugby.  Rugby isn’t traditionally one of the more popular sports within Blackburn and Darwen but it was encouraging to see so many teachers and children embracing what proved to be a successful competition.

I would like to say a huge thank you to Blackburn Rugby Club for allowing us to use their wonderful facilities and for providing referees.  I wish Holy Trinity all the best of luck when they represent the Borough in the Lancashire School games on the 1st July in Blackpool

Blackburn Rugby Club run sessions for Under 12s on Sunday mornings between 10.30 and 12 and they would like to encourage any prospective new members to come along.
