Year 5 & 6 Orienteering Competition

St Paul’s Feniscowles have been named 2014 Blackburn and Darwen Year 5/6 orienteering champions after an exciting 2 days of competition at Witton Park. 13 Schools in total took part in the competition which ran over 2 nights. These schools which attended were: Meadowhead, Lammack, Shadsworth, Lower Darwen, St James’ Lower Darwen, Longshaw, Audley, St Thomas’, The Redeemer, St Paul’s Feniscowles, St Cuthbert’s, St Barnabas Darwen and St Anne’s.

Each Pair was given a map of the park, which showed them where each station was, and a dibber which kept an electronic record of all their stations and timings. Their challenge was to complete the course in the fastest time possible. The scoring was based on how quickly the children got around the 8 station course and back to the start, the 3 quickest times from each school were then added together to get a final score.

In the individual pairs scores a very impressive time from Harry Walker and Bethany Rogers from St Cuthbert’s of 15.57 seconds saw them claim first place overall. They managed to beat James Shorrocks and Elle Walsh, of St Barnabas Darwen, who claimed second and Ebony Baxter and Daniel Oliver from The Redeemer took third place with a great time of 17.46 seconds.

Within the team races although none of their pairs finished in the top 3, St Paul’s managed to get their team round the course quicker than any other. They did this in a brilliant time of 56 minutes and 11 seconds. The Redeemer just missed out in a time of 58.10 seconds to finish second with St Barnabas, Darwen taking third place overall with a time of 61.24 seconds. So St Paul’s are crowned champions and now go onto represent Blackburn with Darwen at the Spar Lancashire School Games on the 1st July in Blackpool. We are sure they will do the borough proud and we wish you all the best, congratulations.
