Blackburn and Darwen School Games
On Monday the 3rd and Tuesday the 4th February Witton Park High School and Darwen Academy hosted the Year 3 & 4 rounds of the Blackburn & Darwen Sportshall Athletics season. 7 schools attended the Witton event and a further 6 attending the following evening at DACA. The schools used their Sports Premium money to attend this and the other athletics events.
This was the second of the three groups of Sportshall events this year, following on from the Year 5&6 competition. St Anthony’s, The Redeemer, Turton and Edgworth, St James’ Lower Darwen, Shadsworth, Wensley Fold, Roe Lee, Meadowhead, Lammack, St Cuthbert’s, St Thomas’, Longshaw and Lower Darwen attended the event. It was similar to the Year 5 & 6 event in that all the schools needed a minimum of 9 boys and 9 girls to compete in field events and relay races. The only differences being the triple jump was replaced with a 5 stride jump and the 6 lap Paarlauf replaced with a hurdles race.
St Cuthbert’s won the event held at Witton Park narrowly edging out Shadsworth, who finished second, and Meadowhead who claimed a well-deserved bronze. Following their success from the Year 5&6 event, Lower Darwen made it two in two by taking 1st place from St Antony’s and The Redeemer respectively in event at DACA.
It was great to see so many children enjoying the events and so many smiles on faces. This was a great chance to get the younger children involved in team events and also to get them ready for next years events as well. All the children took part with a great attitude and a smile on their face, they should all be very proud of themselves.
I would like to say a huge thank you to all of the Young Leaders who helped officiate the events, by giving up their free time they helped these events run smoothly, effectively and without them these events probably couldn’t happen.I would also like to thank all of the schools who have hosted events, schools and pupils who have attended and also the teachers who have put together their teams. We look forward to seeing you at the Key Stage 1 events or next year’s Key Stage 2 events!
